National Science Day: A Grand Celebration by HIMCOSTE

Shimla, February 28, 2025: The Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (HIMCOSTE) organized a grand event at Gaiety Theatre, Shimla, to celebrate National Science Day. The main objective of this event was to spread awareness about science and its applications among students and the general public. This day is observed in honor of the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. This year’s theme is “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for a Developed India”.
Chief Guest’s Address
On this occasion, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Shri Kamlesh Kumar Pant graced the event as the Chief Guest. He visited the science exhibition and appreciated the science models prepared by the students. In his speech, he emphasized the need to bring scientific benefits to society and promote a scientific mindset. He encouraged students to enhance their skills in science and technology and urged the scientific community to find solutions for critical issues like environmental conservation, climate change, and societal challenges.
Participation of Experts and Dignitaries
The event was attended by Dr. Suresh C. Atri, Joint Member Secretary of HIMCOSTE, Mrs. Nisha Baluni, Deputy Director (Elementary Education Department), and Dr. B.K. Tyagi, Science Expert, among other esteemed guests.
Dr. B.K. Tyagi delivered a lecture on “Nature, Sustainability, and Green Technology”, where he enlightened students about the importance of renewable energy, water conservation, and eco-friendly technologies. He highlighted that green energy resources can help combat climate change and are essential for a sustainable future.
HIMCOSTE’s Initiatives for Science Education
Dr. Suresh Atri shared insights about the various science promotion programs run by HIMCOSTE in Himachal Pradesh. He informed that HIMCOSTE organizes the State-Level Himachal Pradesh Children’s Science Congress, which includes science-based competitions, quizzes, model displays, and science seminars.
Additionally, HIMCOSTE conducts science awareness programs in various schools and colleges. A Planetarium Center is being established at the Center for Science, Learning, and Creativity (CSLC) in Shoghi, Shimla, to provide better opportunities for students from rural areas to engage in scientific education and innovation.
