A Green Initiative from the Top

SHIMLA – In a significant move toward environmental sustainability and reducing carbon footprints, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla (notably, the current Governor as of 2024-2026), has officially declared that the Raj Bhavan premises will observe a ‘Petrol-Free Day’ every Sunday.
This initiative aims to set a high-profile example for the citizens of the hill state, emphasizing the urgent need for nature conservation in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.
A Green Initiative from the Top
The decision marks a departure from traditional administrative protocols, prioritizing ecological health over convenience. Under this new rule, the use of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles will be strictly prohibited within the Raj Bhavan complex every Sunday.
“Environment protection is not just a policy but a collective responsibility. By making Raj Bhavan petrol-free once a week, we aim to inspire a culture of walking and using eco-friendly alternatives,” the Governor stated during the announcement.
Key Highlights of the Move:
-
Zero Emissions: All internal movement within the Governor’s residence will shift to walking or electric cycles.
-
Symbolic Leadership: The move is intended to encourage other government departments and the general public to adopt “Vehicle-Free” hours or days.
-
Pollution Control: Shimla, being a major tourist hub, faces significant traffic and air quality challenges; this step is seen as a vital push toward the “Green Himachal” mission.
Impact on the Community
Local environmentalists have hailed the decision as a “breath of fresh air.” By implementing this at the highest level of state representation, the administration hopes to spark a trend across various districts of Himachal Pradesh, potentially leading to similar restrictions in congested areas like the Mall Road and Ridge on weekends.
