CPRI Shimla Hosted Soil & Water Conservation Officers from UP and Chhattisgarh

SHIMLA. A 27-member delegation of Soil and Water Conservation Officers from Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh recently visited the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla. The primary objective of the study tour was to gain first-hand knowledge of advanced potato research, sustainable production practices, and modern agricultural extension activities.

The exposure visit was organized under the 131st Officer Training Programme by the Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun, led by Senior Scientist Dr. Rama Pal.

Emphasis on Agricultural Extension & Modern Tech

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Alok Kumar, Head of the Social Sciences Division, highlighted the rich legacy, core objectives, and pioneering role of CPRI in potato research and development across India.

Dr. Kumar briefed the officers on the institute’s capacity-building programs, Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs), digital advisory services, and collaborative extension initiatives executed alongside various state departments and stakeholders. He emphasized:-

“Translating scientific innovations into practical solutions and delivering them effectively to farmers remains the top priority of CPRI.”

Climate-Resilient Farming & Quality Seed Production

Dr. Brajesh Singh, Director of ICAR-CPRI, presented an overview of the institute’s organizational structure, key research breakthroughs, and future priorities. He highlighted CPRI’s significant contributions in:

• Developing high-yielding and disease-resistant potato varieties.

• Designing climate-resilient cropping models.

• Standardizing quality seed production, crop protection, farm mechanization, and post-harvest management techniques.

The Director underscored that these research endeavors have not only ensured the availability of healthy seed potatoes but have also boosted farmers’ income while strengthening national food and nutritional security.

Field Visit to Kufri Farm & Interactive Session

During the tour, the visiting officers explored CPRI’s renowned Kufri Farm and the Institute Museum, witnessing experimental work on potato breeding, seed multiplication, and crop improvement.

The delegation engaged in detailed technical discussions with scientists covering sustainable crop management, natural resource conservation, and technology transfer methods.

Conclusion

Appreciating ICAR-CPRI’s scientific achievements, the participants noted that the practical insights gained would help make soil and water conservation programs in their home states far more effective. The study visit concluded with a shared commitment to fostering institutional collaboration and knowledge exchange for sustainable agricultural development.
